The Business Balance

Finding a balance between two things can be challenging enough without the pressure of loved ones, pets, commitments, and clients. So how, as business owners, do we find balance in our everyday lives that allows for a scalable business and a happy home?

Finding a balance between two things can be challenging enough without the pressure of loved ones, pets, commitments, and clients. So how, as business owners, do we find balance in our everyday lives that allows for a scalable business and a happy home?

Learn balance from others

We all want to see ourselves succeed at a task that has defeated many new entrepreneurs because we like to think we are more intelligent than others. Remember, you are only more innovative if you learn from the mistakes made by those before you and the mistakes you make yourself.

For example, growing up, I watched my mother work 12+ hour days because, for some reason, the balance never leveled out. She was constantly having fires on both sides of the scale that would need assistance, and more often than not, the two worlds would overlap, leading to the excessive workday. This happened not because my mother wanted to work long hours or because she wasn’t smart enough to create a line between work and home. It was because she didn’t want to disappoint either side of the scale, she would take work calls at home, and she would take time out of the workday to assist her kids.

When I became an entrepreneur, I told myself the 12+ hr workday was not in my cards. I could find a balance between working at home and living at home. This is not yet the case. I am almost two years into my business, and I still work past five, I check my work email on Saturdays, and there are times when my husband has to remind me to put away the work and spend time with him.

But guess what, I am getting better! Yes, I work after 5, but I do not slave overwork till midnight fighting a 12hr day as I did at the start of my business. I look at data on the weekends but only when I want and not during family time. I am learning, and so can you.

Balancing a growing or new business is challenging. It takes a lot of time and a lot of patience. It’s not something that happens overnight, but it’s also not something that doesn’t happen without many sacrifices. You have to work to see business balance.

Growing successful businesses is hard, but this is why balancing it becomes even more complex. Because it’s difficult to realize how you can transform working too much into working just enough, and a lot of this has to do with handing off the workload where you can and when you can.

Yes, it’s your business, but you deserve to have support, and you DON’T have to do this all alone! Create a business balance!

If you have been following my journey, you know that I do not fluff up or glamorize the entrepreneurial life. I tell you the down and dirty and the hidden tears that women tend to hide in fear of seeming weak.

Ladies, we are strong. We can enjoy a groundbreaking day of work and a relaxing night with our family. IT IS POSSIBLE.

You may have noticed I haven’t discussed specific steps in creating work-life balance because each entrepreneur’s definition of balance is different. All that matters is you find peace and a non-stressful environment that works for YOU.

Soon I want to start a family. A family will change the balance I have been working to create these last two years, but guess what? I will just find a new balance. You can’t make everyone happy, so make sure you are!
